Day 2 Field Guide: Mt. Rainier via Ashford
Friday, April 17, 2026 • Seattle Center → Ashford → Paradise → Seattle

One-car or caravan-friendly day trip. Built around a 9 AM chain pickup at Whittaker Mountaineering in Ashford, then straight to Paradise for the full Skyline Loop — 5.5 miles, strenuous, one of the best alpine hikes in the Pacific Northwest. Lunch happens at Paradise after the hike. Home by ~5:45 PM. This is a real hiking day, not a stroll. Come prepared.

⚠ Check Morning of Trip
Verify NPS road status before leaving Seattle. The Longmire-to-Paradise road can open late, close early, or stay closed depending on overnight weather. Do not skip this step.
nps.gov/mora → Road Status  •  @MountRainierNPS
⛽ Tire Chains: Mandatory
All vehicles must carry tire chains through May 1 — including AWD and 4WD. Rental car + chains = bring both. Chains available at Whittaker stop. Vehicle physically needs them on-board before the park gate.
✓ No Reservations Needed
No timed-entry reservation required for Mt. Rainier in 2026. Just show up. Park entrance fee is $30/vehicle — bring a credit card. No cash accepted at the gate.
🍔 Pack Lunch — No Food at Paradise
Paradise Inn food service is not reliable in April. Do not count on buying lunch at the mountain. Pack sandwiches, wraps, snacks, and water before leaving Seattle.

🏃 Hike Details

Skyline Loop — Full Circuit
5.5 mi loop • Strenuous • 10:25 AM – ~2:00 PM
Trailhead: Upper Paradise, main trail area
Passes Myrtle Falls, Panorama Point, and Glacier Vista. Expect deep snow on the upper third of the loop. Microspikes or traction devices strongly recommended.
⚠ April Snow Note
Upper sections of the loop near Panorama Point will be snow-covered. If conditions above Myrtle Falls look unsafe, turn around there and call it a 2-mile out-and-back. Still a great day.

🎰 What to Bring

✅ Waterproof jacket
✅ Warm layers (base + mid)
✅ Hat and gloves
✅ Waterproof hiking boots
✅ Daypack
✅ Packed lunch + snacks
✅ At least 1L water per person
✅ Sunglasses + sunscreen
✅ Phone charger or power bank
✅ Microspikes / traction devices
✅ Trekking poles (optional but helpful in snow)
✅ Credit card (park fee, no cash)
✅ Tire chains (in the vehicle)

✅ Must-Do Checks

🔴 Check NPS road status before leaving Seattle
🔴 Confirm Longmire gate to Paradise opened on schedule
🔴 Call Whittaker ahead for chain availability — (360) 569-2142
🔴 Confirm chains are physically in the vehicle before the gate
🔴 Bring a credit card for the $30 park entrance fee
🔴 Pack lunch the night before or morning of — nothing to buy at Paradise

🔀 Backup Plan: If Paradise Is Delayed or Closed

Keep the Ashford stop the same • Continue into the park only as conditions allow • Replace the Skyline day with Longmire as the main destination • Use Trail of the Shadows at Longmire as the backup hike • Eat the packed lunch there and stretch the visit if weather improves • Return to Seattle earlier if mountain conditions are poor

🎯 Day 2 Decision Rule

🟢 Road Status: Good
Follow the Paradise plan exactly. Skyline day, lunch at Paradise, back in Seattle around 5:45.
🔴 Gate Delayed or Conditions Sketchy
Switch to the Longmire backup. Do not force the upper mountain.
🏛
Day 3: Seattle Core Day
Saturday, April 18, 2026 • Space Needle → Pike Place → REI → Brewery → Mariners

Seattle greatest hits, built for five guys from Texas who came here to actually do stuff. Morning 10K, original Starbucks, Pike Place Market, REI Flagship, a brewery, and a Mariners game anchoring the night. This is the full city day. The game is the non-negotiable — everything else builds toward it.

🕐 Exact Schedule — April 18, 2026

7:30
AM
🏃 Depart lodging for 10K run
Head out from Seattle Center / Space Needle area. Run gear on, phones charged, pace yourselves.
7:40
AM
🏃 10K Run — Seattle Center to Waterfront Loop
Route: Seattle Center south through Belltown, down to the waterfront, Elliott Bay Trail north, back up through Olympic Sculpture Park to Seattle Center. ~65 min at an easy group pace. Flat-to-rolling, scenic, and on-road the whole way. Strava it.
8:45
AM
🛀 Cool down + shower window
Back at lodging. 30 minutes to shower and reset. Stagger if there's one bathroom. Out the door by 9:30.
9:30
AM
🚗 Head to Pike Place Market area
Rideshare or walk down (~15 min on foot, 5 min by car). Destination: Original Starbucks at 1912 Pike Place.
9:45
AM
☕ Original Starbucks — 1912 Pike Place
Get your coffee, get the photo, move on. Line moves fast in the morning. Grab breakfast here or at a Pike Place stall nearby.
10:30
AM
🍃 Explore Pike Place Market
Fish throw, flower stalls, small shops, farmers market section. Give it 75 minutes before it gets too crowded. Wander. Don't over-plan this block.
11:45
AM
🍕 Lunch in or near Pike Place
~45 minutes. Good options: Matt's in the Market (reserve ahead), Honest Biscuits, Piroshky Piroshky for a quick grab. Or just eat at the market stalls.
12:30
PM
🚗 Head to REI Seattle Flagship
~10 min rideshare to 222 Yale Ave N, South Lake Union. Not a mall REI. This is the flagship — climbing wall, gear wall, the whole thing.
1:00
PM
🏔 REI Seattle Flagship
222 Yale Ave N • One hour. Multi-level flagship store in a converted armory building. Pick up anything you wish you'd packed for Day 2. Indoor climbing wall. Worth the stop even if you don't buy anything.
2:00
PM
🚗 Return toward Seattle Center / regroup
Head back. Decide here: Space Needle or skip straight to brewery. See Optional section below.
2:30
PM
🔮 Space Needle Optional
It's right there. If the group has energy and nobody is already over it, do it. Observation deck views of the Sound and Rainier on a clear day are legitimately great. Book ahead if you're committing to this.
3:30
PM
🍺 Brewery Stop
One intentional hour at a good Seattle brewery before the game. See Stops section for recommendations. Pace yourselves — T-Mobile Park has plenty of beer and you want to remember the game.
4:30
PM
🚗 Head to T-Mobile Park — pregame
Rideshare to First Ave S and Edgar Martinez Dr S. Gates typically open 2 hours before first pitch. Get in early, walk the park, find your seats, grab ballpark food.
5:15
PM
⚾ Mariners Game — T-Mobile Park
Confirm actual game time at mlb.com/mariners. Assume evening first pitch, likely 6:40 or 7:10 PM. This is the anchor. Tickets in hand before you leave Seattle. After the game: back to Capitol Hill or keep the night going depending on energy.

📍 Stops & Why They Matter

Original Starbucks — 1912 Pike Place
The one the bachelor asked for. First location, still running, still serves coffee. Worth the 20 minutes. Get the reserve roast if it's available.
Pike Place Market
Essential Seattle stop. Fish throw, flower stalls, craftsmen, the Market itself. Best in the morning before the tourist rush hits. One of the best farmers markets in the country.
REI Seattle Flagship — 222 Yale Ave N
The right REI to visit. Multi-level flagship in a converted national guard armory. Indoor climbing wall. Way more interesting than any REI you've been to in Texas.
Brewery Stop — pick one
Fremont Brewing (South Lake Union taproom, easy from REI) • Pike Brewing (right at Pike Place, easy from market) • Elysian Capitol Hill (near lodging, good for early evening). Pick one, sit down, order a round.
⚾ Mariners — T-Mobile Park
The anchor. One of the better ballpark experiences in MLB. Retractable roof means the game happens rain or shine. Confirm game time at mlb.com/mariners and buy tickets before the trip.

💰 Cost Estimate Per Person

10K run Free
Starbucks + breakfast $8–15
Pike Place lunch $20–35
Brewery stop $18–40
Mariners ticket $25–80+
Ballpark food + drinks $20–45
Rideshare / transit $10–25
Planning Total
Budget version $100–140 / person
Normal version $145–220 / person
Bigger-spend version $225–325+ / person

📋 Booking & Reservation Notes

⚠ Buy now: Mariners tickets — buy before the trip, prices go up
⚠ Book ahead: Space Needle — only if the group is committing to it
🕐 Optional: Brewery table — only if you want a specific sit-down spot
✓ No res needed: Original Starbucks
✓ No res needed: Pike Place Market
✓ No res needed: REI Flagship
Mariners Ticket Note
Confirm the April 18 home game at mlb.com/mariners. Dynamic pricing — buy sooner rather than later. Lower bowl is worth it for a bachelor group. T-Mobile Park is a great venue regardless of section.

👔 What to Wear & Bring

🏃 Running gear for the morning
👟 Day shoes for walking after (broken in, not new)
⚾ Mariners gear if anyone has it — wear it to the game
🌧 Light rain layer — Seattle in April shifts fast
🔋 Portable charger — long day, full phone matters
👤 ID for the brewery and ballpark
👃 Sunglasses if weather looks good
💳 Credit card — most vendors around Pike Place and the park are cashless

🔄 Optional Swaps

Skip the Space Needle
Use that 2:30–3:30 window as extra time at the brewery. If the group is dragging or it's overcast, just skip it and go drink beer.
Skip REI if nobody cares
If the group genuinely has no interest, use that hour for more time at Pike Place or an early beer at Pike Brewing, which is right there.
Skip the run
If Day 2 wrecked people's legs, skip the 10K and sleep until 9. Leave for Pike Place at 9:30 instead. No shame, still a full day.
Add a second brewery
If the Space Needle gets skipped and energy is high, squeeze in two brewery stops before heading to T-Mobile. Fremont → Elysian or Pike → Elysian both work geographically.

🎯 Day 3 Game Plan

🟢 Everyone's feeling it
Full version: 10K → Starbucks → Pike Place → REI → Space Needle → Brewery → Mariners. The whole day as planned.
🟡 Group is slow-moving
Shorten Pike Place, skip Space Needle, keep brewery + Mariners intact. The game doesn't move.
🔴 Non-negotiable
If tickets are bought, the Mariners game is locked. Everything else is flex. Protect the game time.
